Thessaloniki, capital-city of Northern Greece, possesses
a unique blend of ancient and modern culture that
shaped the 2,300 years of its dramatic history. On
the west Thessaloniki is flanked by an industrial
zone, on the east by a residential district and on
the heights to the north by the “old town” quarter.
The centre on the waterfront is marked by Plateia
Atistotelous, a large square open to the sea. The
city has large avenues, parks and squares, commercial
streets lined with trees and elegant shop-windows,
an abundance of neoclassical buildings, modern dwellings
and old neighbourhoods with winding cobblestone alleys.
The shops in the commercial streets of Thessaloniki,
(Tsimiski, Venizelou, Agias Sofias, Ermou, Mitropoleos,
Egnatia and M. Iossif) offer a variety of jewellery,
furs, popular art and craft objects, clothing etc.,
to satisfy even the most demanding tastes. Yesterday
meets today at old tavernas, “ouzeries” and restaurants
next to lush hotels and bars, nightclubs, cinemas,
theatres and cosy sidewalk cafes.
The tour begins with a visit to the archaeological
museum and continues with a city tour, focusing on
the past and the present of the city and much more.
If you plan a lengthy stay in Thessaloniki, you will
have an opportunity to travel to nearby sites and
enjoy unique experiences in settings of great beauty.
Here are a few tours that are possible with an early-morning
start:
With an early start, we pass through fertile plains
and reach the region where Mount Olympus is found.
Stopover for coffee. We then head for Kalampaka, a
small town at the foot of Meteora. Free time for lunch.
Immediately afterwards we ascent to the “stone forest
of Christ”, Meteora. Those who see it for the first
time believe it to be a geological miracle. Thousands
of rocks, both small and large, merge to form an unearthly
sight. Wanting to approach God, bold monks built monasteries
at the peaks of these rocks. And it is here that they
have lived, as true hermits, for more than 600 hundred
years. The katholika (central parts of churches) of
the monasteries have been pained by skilled religious
painters from the late-Byzantine years. Still hanging
from the towers are the nets that the monks used for
ascending and descending. Today, six monasteries survive.
We will have time to visit two of these before heading
back. For entering the monasteries, appropriate clothing
is required. Ladies must not wear short skirts and
must have long sleeves. Men are not allowed to wear
shorts.
The Athos peninsula, or Mount Athos (in Greek Agion
Oros), is a theocratic state dedicated to the glory
of God and the preservation of Orthodoxy. To the Greeks
it is known as the “garden of the Blessed Virgin”.
The cruise around Mount Athos is a wonderful combination
of knowledge and pleasure. You will be taken to Panagia
Bay in luxury coaches. From there, you will be given
a tour along the coasts of the peninsula by ship,
where you can enjoy the unique landscape and the magnificent
architecture of the monasteries. Early in the afternoon,
we stop over at Ouranoupolis for lunch and a swim.
The cruise ends at Panagia Bay. From there you will
be taken to your hotels by coach.
A lazy day cruise between the peninsulas of Kassandra
and Sithonia. Sailing the crystal-clear waters of
the Toroneos Bay, you may enjoy full-bar facilities
on board. Disembarkation at the port of Marmaras,
a tourist resort in Sithonia., pause at any splendid
beach for a swim. Return to Kassandra, with the opportunity
available for an afternoon dive, thus closing an unforgettable
day.
Sithonia is one of the most blessed regions in Greece.
Lush green rolling hills, winding coastline, crystal
clear waters, steep mountains, picturesque villages
and hospitable people all form part of this wonderful
collage. When travelling in Sithonia, one notices
that despite the growth in tourism, many parts of
this region are still untouched. Its olive groves
still bear rich oil, its vines intoxicating wine,
its herbs and wild flowers exceptional honey and its
crystalline waters fresh seafood. During this trip
we will stop over for coffee at the picturesque Neos
Marmaras, enjoy panoramic vistas from various points
and at the beautiful Sarti, take time to have lunch
and dive for a swim. Return to hotels late in the
afternoon.
Our trip includes a visit to the Petralona Cave,
one of the most beautiful in the country. The formations
inside the cave are mesmerising, kindling the imagination.
In prehistoric years it served as a shelter for man
and beast. Research has brought to light tools made
of stone and bones, traces of fire (the oldest in
Europe) as well as the skull of the renowned “Archanthropos”
(Primal Man) whose age is still a bone of contention
among anthropologists. This half-day trip includes
a visit to the town of Nea Moudania and the traditional
village of Afitos. Return to the hotels early in the
afternoon.
The tour follows the traces left by Alexander the
Great. Our first stop is at Vergina (ancient Aigai),
the first capital of ancient Macedonia. The city was
built in the 7th century BC and became the political
and religious capital of the Macedonians. It is here
that we will visit the royal tombs that were brought
to light in 1977. Among these tombs lies that of Philip
II (father of Alexander the Great), in which funeral
gifts of inestimable historical value were found.
Free time for lunch. Our final stop is at Pella, the
second capital of the ancient Macedonians and birthplace
of Alexander the Great. The mosaics that decorated
the floors of the homes in those days were exceptionally
beautiful. A visit to the archaeological site and
the small but truly remarkable museum. Return to the
hotels late in the afternoon.
Get acquainted with Greek music including the marvellous
sounds of bouzouki. The program starts with a rich
open buffet featuring many delicious dishes of the
Greek cuisine, salads, fruits and deserts and meat
specialities directly from the grill, to taste.
Live Greek music and a group of talented dancers will
inspire you to join the fun.
It is the first waterpark in Greece and the largest
in Europe (150,000 square metres). You can enjoy the
view floating down the Lazy River. Feel the rush of
the waterslides. Rock yourself on the waves. Participate
in games. Lie on a deck-chair and catch some rays.
Slow tuned for summer adventures.
